FIRST, THINK: Who is this person and why are they significant? Make a list of people you
might like to talk about and list some adjectives to describe them. Consider how comfortable
and capable you are discussing someone if they are no longer alive.

-My mom (Sara): my mom has always been my rock and role model. I can always count on her for anything and if I ever need anything I can talk to her about anything. She is also very successful and smart. I would feel very confident writing the speech about her because she is my role model.

-my sister (Maggie): my sister is younger than me but she means so much to me and I still look up to her, she is very smart and true to herself which I admire. I would be comfortable writing the speech about her as well.

-my dad (Eric): My dad is probably the person I can count on the most he is very dependable and I know I can call him whenever and he will help me. He is a very hard worker as well and a lot of people respect him at his job. I would like to write the speech about my dad but i’d probably have an easier time writing it about my mom or sister.
NEXT: BRAINSTORM: What other stories or anecdotes can you think of? Continue to add
depth to your outline and speech. (Writing a draft of a toast for your “person,” even if you are
not composing a toast, might help shape your speech.) Imagine that this is a SKETCH.
